Description
The nursing process is a tool that puts knowledge into practice. By utilizing this systematic problem-solving method, nurses can determine the health care needs of an individual and provide personalized care.
Write a paper (1,750-2,000 words) on cancer and approach to care based on the utilization of the nursing process. Include the following in your paper:
- Describe the diagnosis and staging of cancer.
- Describe at least three complications of cancer, the side effects of treatment, and methods to lessen physical and psychological effects.
- Discuss what factors contribute to the yearly incidence and mortality rates of various cancers in Americans.
- Explain how the American Cancer Society (ACS) might provide education and support. What ACS services would you recommend and why?
- Explain how the nursing process is utilized to provide safe and effective care for cancer patients across the life span. Your explanation should include each of the five phases and demonstrate the delivery of holistic and patient-focused care.
- Discuss how undergraduate education in liberal arts and science studies contributes to the foundation of nursing knowledge and prepares nurses to work with patients utilizing the nursing process. Consider mathematics, social and physical sciences, and science studies as an interdisciplinary research area.
You are required to cite to a minimum of four sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and relevant to nursing practice.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

1.1Diagnosis and Staging
Diagnosis of cancer begins with the identification of the many symptoms that are
caused by benign tumors depending on the type of cancer. Depending on the severity of the
tumor, the physician will prescribe several ways to handle the situation. Where one has
symptoms spanning a couple of weeks, the doctor performs a physical exam and recommends
tests to find out the cause of the symptoms. When one is diagnosed with cancer, the doctor
initiates further tests to determine the stage of the tumor (Navani, 2015). Stage relates to the
degree of disease that develops and is focused on variables such as the size and distribution of
cancer. When the stage of the tumor is determined, the doctor will determine the treatment to
deal with it. Cancer can trigger various diseases such as abnormal lumps, unexplained
increase, or loss of weight or night sweats. Only a physician can conclude whether or not the
conditions are triggered by cancer.
Diagnosis may begin by questioning about your medical background and family
background and performing a physical examination. The physician may also initiate
laboratory exams, imaging examinations, or other tests or processes. A biopsy may also be
needed as often it is the only way to know whether one has cancer. Certain substances in the
body can show a hint of cancer at high or small concentrations. Laboratory blood tests, saliva
exams, or other bodily fluids measured can assist physicians in diagnosing. Image analysis
produces visual evidence of regions within your flesh, which assist physicians in seeing if
there is cancer (Kasivisvanathan, 2018). The images can be achieved through the use of CT
scans, performing an MRI, a bone scan, nuclear scan, an ultrasound, biopsy, x-rays, among
other methods. Staging of cancer depends on information obtained by the physician about the
location of the tumor, type of cell, tumor size, the possibility of cancer spreading to nearby

lymph nodes, the possibility of the cancer being located in another body part, and the tumor
grade. Using the information obtained above, the physician will stage cancer using different
methods available. The main method for Staging is the TNM staging system. The system
emphasizes the size, lymph nodes affected, and the possibility of cancer has spread to other
parts.
2.1Complications
Cancer and its treatment pose the affected with several complications. These
complications include pain. Pain can come from cancer or cancer therapy, but not all cancers
are painful. Drugs and other methods can cure cancer-related pain efficiently. Pain is one of
the most common symptoms in cancer patients. You can experience pain from tumors,
operations, radiation, intravenous chemotherapy, targeted therapy, helpful treatments like
