Description

The 4-MAT REVIEW system is a way of responding to readings that requires the learner to interact with new ideas on several levels. Please start with a title page that has the title of the paper, student name, and our course. You should then use the following format in preparing your 4-MAT REVIEWS:

1.Summary:After listing author and chapter, summarize what you have read as if you were the author boiling down the book into 600 tight words.Demonstrate that you have read and internalized the assigned book by writing a concise summary. This section is not a commentary or listing of topics, but rather an insightful “précis” of the content. This section should be at least 600 words in length.

2.Concrete responses:Get personally involved (vulnerable). In 600 words, relate a personal life experience that this book connected with in your own life.Relate your story in first person, describing action, quoting sentences you remember hearing or saying. In the teaching style of Jesus, this is a do-it-yourself parable or case study. You will retain more information that is meaningful by making this critical, personal connection. What video memory began to roll? This is your chance to tell your story and make new ideas found in the book your own. This section should be at least 600 words in length.

3.Reflection:What new questions pop up for you in response to what you have read?Keep a rough note sheet at hand, as you read.Begin with questions like, “What would I like further information on?” Where do I agree/not agree with the author?” or “What bothers me/excites me about this content?”This section should be at least 600 words in length.

4. Application:How does the information in this book influence how you are going to continue your own personal and professional growth? What actions or changes are you going to make in your life as a result of your learning? Be specific in summarizing your action steps. This section should be at least 600 words in length.

4-MATT REVIEW: EVICTED BY MATTHEW DESMOND
Summary: Evicted by Matthew Desmond
Originally published on 1 March 2016, Evicted is a non-fictional exploration of
the housing situation in the United States during the 2008 recession. The book, written by
Matthew Desmond, is set in the most impoverished areas of Milwaukee (Wisconsin) (Desmond,
2016). The book is Matthew Desmond’s attempt at understanding the housing crisis in the
United States at that time, while at the same time exploring the socio-economic factors affecting
the US population, at least, as far as housing is concerned. The book follows the housing stories
of eight families, struggling to pay for housing. It highlights transcending issues of the society at
that time, preceding times and offers insight into futuristic times by exploring issues such as
affordable housing, extreme poverty and economic exploitation of the poor in the United States.
The book follows the story of Arleen Bell and her two sons, Jafaris and Jori. After
they are evicted from their apartment, they initially move into a homeless shelter (Lodge) then to
the predominantly black North Side neighborhood of Milwaukee, where most other families in
the book reside/. The landlord of their new apartment is Sherenna Tarver (Desmond, 2016).
Sherenna was a teacher before getting into property management. She is in
business with her husband, Quentin. She has several tenants (some of whom make up the eight
families followed throughout the book). On tenant, a retired disabled army veteran and a father
of two is in dispute with Sherenna. Sherenna, under the encouragement of her husband, is forced
to evict Lamar despite his disability for not meeting rent payments on time. A young mother
named Patrice was evicted from the unit above Lamar’s but has since moved downstairs with her
mother and younger siblings (Desmond, 2016).
In the predominantly poor and white College, Mobile Home Park in Milwaukee’s
South Side, trailer park residents rally behind Tobin Charney, the owner of the trailer park and

Lenny Lawson, the manager after the city council refuses to renew Tobin’s license. The residents
are rallying behind Tobin because they are afraid of the trailer park is closed, they might be
forced to move into the North Side (mostly occupied by blacks). The city council demands Tobin
to clean up the trailer park, and he immediately begins evictions. Although the trailer park is
filled with drug addicts, a crack-addicted couple (Ned and Pam) are issued with an eviction
notice. Pam is pregnant, and her two daughters are the only black children in the trailer park
(Desmond, 2016).
Arleen wants to go back to public housing, where she lived when she was 19
years old but has little hope of finding public housing assistance since over three quarters (75%)
of persons eligible for public housing assistance do not receive the assistance they desperately
need (Desmond, 2016). Sherenna refuses to fix broken windows in Patrice’s apartment, her
daughter (Patrice’s) gets sick as a result and Patrice decides to withhold half of her rent. In the
meantime, Doreen deducts almost $150 from her rent to pay a plumber after Sherenna refuses to
