District of Columbia Policy Institute Initiative
Overview of history and objectives
The District of Columbia policy institute is funded by the Grants administration, the
mayor and the public policy research organization focused on justice policy and crime. The
DCPI seeks to improve its administration of Justice through evidence-based research. The DCPI
has set up a neighborhood crime prevention initiative in Columbia to reduce the crime levels
within the state. The DCPI seeks to accomplish this by dividing the NCPI into three major
components namely intervention and crime suppression, targeted crime prevention, and
interagency collaboration. The NCPI was established in 2010 and has been operating for the last
9 years (Hannaway, 2019). It was to be in line with the public safety goals set by the FIA to
address the root causes of crime. The program is part of the criminal justice agency of the district
of Columbia with the Metropolitan Police Department being the main agency. The NCPI was
created to allow constant monitoring so as to enable easy monitoring and to ensure it was making
progress in reducing crime in Columbia. The NCPI was created as a result of an increase in
criminal activities and deviant behavior in the district. Between 2006-2010, there were 574
incidences of robbery. The rise in robbery cases was mainly attributed to the 2007-2008 world
food price crisis but the crime rate still soared even after the crisis ended in 2008.
Literature and organizational structure
The summary of the research on initiatives that involve diverse approaches executed by
multiagency partners to reduce crime and improve neighborhoods. It identifies two types of
interventions: those focused on reducing or preventing crime at the neighborhood level, and
those with broader goals of improving neighborhoods or resident well-being within
neighborhoods. While both types of interventions are place-based, they usually involve different
