Pesticides The Need to Improve Government Pesticide Regulations Policy Analysis Angela Clark Central Michigan University PSC 514 Problem Large chemical corporations have too much political influence on pesticide regulations; pesticides are dangerous toxic chemicals. Evidence • Harmful chemical pesticides has been linked to several types of diseases including cancer, nervous system and reproductive problems. A recent study regarding the affects of pesticides indicates that when pesticides are applied on a surface, they travel outside their intended area of use by air, soil or water (“Why Organic: Harmful,” 2016). • According to Dye (2015), pesticide agricultural runoff from fertilizers is among one of the four major causes of water pollution (Dye, 2015). Evidence Cont. • According to Towers (2011), “there are six largest pesticide corporations: collectively known as the “Big 6” who lobby on behalf of pesticide products know to cause cancer, reproductive harm, developmental delays in children and water contamination.” 1. Monsanto 2. Syngenta 3. Bayer 4. BASF 5. Dow 6. DuPont Evidence Cont. • The “Big 6” chemical companies have prominent influence in federal politics. • Towers (2011) found that “the top six pesticide producing corporations spent over $15 million in direct lobbying to win over elected officials, and have contributed to candidates in numerous races across the country including those they have been actively lobbying while in office” (p.1). Alternatives • • • • Become less reliant on chemical pesticides. Change the traditional way of controlling pest. Provide organically farmed products. Polyculture farming - Growing more than one crop within the same cultivation system. Criteria • • • • • • Must be cost effective Must be maintainable Must be environmentally safe Must be ecological harmless Must be nontoxic Must be all natural Projected Outcome • • • • • • Save lives due to diseases cause by chemical exposure. Reduce political influence of Chemical companies. Provide better quality of food. Healthier food supply. Reduce and or eliminate the use of chemical pesticides. Promote healthier living standards. Trade-Offs • Changing current policies will require developing new programs that may require changes to farming regulations. • Farmers may see an increase in production cost due to purchasing non-toxic, organic products. • Taste of some foods may be different as some organically grown products have variations in taste. • If there is a reduction in the current chemical products provided by large chemical corporations they may increase prices of other products to off-set cost of more environmentally friendly products. Decide Pesticides are dangerous chemicals, known to pollute the environment and contaminate and deplete the nutritional value of our food. My Story • I am concerned about the harmful affects of chemical pesticides. I eat organic food whenever possible. I say whenever possible because like many Americas, I am guilty of stopping at a fast food restaurant when pressed for time or for a quick bite on the go. • Organically grown food is better for you. Studies indicate that chemical pesticides have been found in several types of nonorganic food that we eat which may cause health risks. • In order to protect consumers, we need to improve Governmental regulations which control guidelines on the potentially hazardous pesticide chemicals in our environment and in the food that we consume.
