Part II – Reflection on Lessons from the Farewell Address
Introduction/thesis statement: George Washington’s vision, as evident in his
Farewell Address, was to see Americans employing the appropriate ways of achieving
greatness and a prosperous feature. At the time, George Washington dealt with multiple
issues, many of which were results of partisan politics interfering with foreigners’ affairs. He
was the need for Americans to remain true to their country, and protect it from pretending

friendships from foreign nations. However, the question of whether the US has followed the
advice of this great man during the last 50 years is questionable.

Introduction
George Washington is still regarded as one of the leaders who helped shape the today’s
place of the United States (US) in the international politics. Multiple understandings, many of
which advocate harmony and respect between key players in the global politics, were

Washington. Among the many marks that he left on the US, and the way the country
operates, his decision to decline a third presidential term, addressed in what is popularly
known as the “Farewell Address”, is regarded as one of the contributing determinants of the
American philosophy of politics and relations. In his speech, George Washington addressed a
vast range of issues, all of which he deemed important, and could help steer the country
towards a relatively more prosperous future. It is interesting how trusting George Washington
was, given how he believed in his people for effective running of the nation, and only had to
offer pieces of advice about how he believed the country should move on. However, it is
imperative to understand factors, or rather circumstances that may have contributed to the
“address”, as well as the decision that George Washington made, and from which vital
lessons can be inferred. This paper explores the farewell address, discussing circumstances in
which the US was, both locally and internationally, and which prompted the need for a
change, and the relevance of advices that George Washington offered.
