In the post-Mao Zedong reform period, Deng Xiaoping made a fundamental wager
that helped speed up economic and administrative reform. 1In the process, there was freezing
of political reform, disarmed popular unrest, and minimization of political instability. The
Tiananmen protests of 1989 were as a result of speed high economic reform that was not
focusing on political reforms and human rights reforms the 1980s. 2In 1989, the government
crackdown caught the Western media’s attention and resulted to the exposure of the
Tiananmen protest as a contest between Chinese students and the state over democratization.
The actual causes and manifestations of this movement are much complicated. The
Hong Kong protest of 2019 in the period of modern development has brought back the
memory of Tiananmen incident of the 1980s. However, in 2019 situations, students and
young people in Hong Kong are different because they are simply demanding for more
freedom and want change in regards to one party system in the country. For this multimethod project, I will focus on the real causes of Tiananmen protests, the western
