Introduction
The advent of technology has been beneficial to many fields in the business worlds
today. A good example of the area that has seen tremendous benefits from the advent of
technology is the aviation industry. With technological inventions, there have been a lot of
changes in this industry that have improved air traffic control and flight services hence
making work efficiency. In the early days, the aviation industry faced a lot of challenges.
However, with the use of the new technology, some of these challenges have been solved, a
factor that has led to a growth of the industry not only in the US but also in other nations both
developed and developing. With this, there has been improved security which is one of the
major problems facing this industry since time immemorial. However, today, it is becoming
easy to address this snag and sooner or later it will be a problem of the past; thanks to the
evolution of technology. This research paper will focus on the air traffic control system in
details. The paper will start by exploring Nav Canada in details and ATC in the US as well as
exploring how the two differ. Secondly, the paper will look at space-based ADS-B, and
define what air traffic control (ATC) is, services offered, and air traffic options. The research
will also examine types of RADAR, define radar, describe how radar works and distinguish
between primary and secondary radars before concluding by summarizing the key points of
the research.
NAV CANADA
What is it?
This is a non-profit company that is run privately. Notably, in Canada, the civil air
navigation system (ANS) is operated by Nav Canada. Besides, this company owns the very
same (ANS) in Canada. The firm was started in compliance with the ANS Act (Floyd, Park &
Sharma, 2017).

Within the company, there are about 1900 employees who work as air traffic controllers.
There are also around 650 workers working as flight services specialists, and 700
technologists. Notably, the ANS in Canada was owned by the government under transport
ministry until the year 1996 when the government privatized the ANS to belong to nav
Canada (Floyd, Park & Sharma, 2017). Since then, nav Canada has been operating the air
navigation system in the country, a factor that has seen a dramatic improvement in several
areas. For instance, the firm has been able to offer a conducive environment where there is
safe and orderly speedy flow when it comes to air traffic. This is one area where there was a
problem when the ANS was under the transport ministry due to political issues. However,
since the privatization, everything has been streamlined since the company employs workers
with the skills and expertise needed in every area. Besides, internal issues are well addressed
hence making the entire work efficient.
Additionally, the transport Canada that managed ANS had other several problems
which necessitated the privatization. For instance, the infrastructure at that time was old and
there was a need to update it but the government was facing financial restraints. As such,
there were system delays and the cost of operation was becoming more, posing a threat to the
industry. This led to a shortage of ATC. Apparently, the pressure became more and several
solutions were tabled before opting for privatization (McDougall & Roberts, 2008). Since
then, the operations have been streamlined and the airplane industry is working well. Nav
Canada is managed by fifteen board of directors and has no shareholders since it is a nonprofit company. It is the second world company when it comes to air navigation system
providers across the globe.
Air traffic control (ATC) is very important when it comes to the aviation industry.
Ideally, ATC entails services offered by ground-based ATCs. The ATC direct airplanes on
the ground and also via the territory which is controlled. Besides, the ATCs can offer services

to aircraft in areas which are called non-controlled airspace. The ATC in the US differs from
nav Canada but in a few areas. This is because ATC is majorly meant to ensure that there ...
