Interviews and Telephone Surveys
Interviews and telephone surveys are conventional data collection techniques in criminal
justice research. This is because they prove to be more convenient than the rest of the data
collection methods in this particular field. The primary advantage of using interviews for data
collection is to get the motives, experience, attitudes, interpretations, and opinions from the
participants (Hagan & Hagan, 2017). Interviews can also find in-depth information from
participants which they would otherwise not talk about in focus groups or write about in surveys.
However, interviews can be time-consuming and also require a skilled interviewer for it to be
effective. At the same time, interpreting the interviews can be challenging due to inconsistencies
among the participants.
Telephone surveys, on the other hand, makes data collection convenient by making it easy
to secure respondent participation since people rarely ignore telephone calls. They can also
generate more insightful information because of the direct involvement of participants and
immediate garnering of information by the researchers. Lastly, telephone surveys are a cheap and
flexible option for researchers (Hagan & Hagan, 2017). On the disadvantages, telephone surveys
