My name is Kelly. I am a psychology major and am entering my junior year. I have taken a few online classes in the past and really enjoyed them. I like being able to have a more flexible schedule and I find myself having better self-discipline. In this class I am hoping to get a better idea of how we are influenced by other people.” After looking back at my introduction post with the idea of narratives in mind, I do feel like it was very general and not very personal in nature. Even so, if I had to come up with a narrative that this represented, I would say it could be: Anna is a student who is positive and looking forward to learning. I think this narrative fits my introduction because I mention my positive experience with online classes, as well as what I hope to learn. While doing the readings, I found the following quote to be important: “We cannot understand other people without such cultural narratives. But more important, we cannot understand ourselves – who we are, who we have been, and where we want to go- without recognizing and seeing how we fit into cultural narratives” (Lakoff, 2009, p. 34). I think by understanding and being more aware of the different narratives that exist in our cultures, it can help us formulate our own personal narratives and explore, as well as establish our social identities. Post #2 oing back to the first post that I did I was trying to think about how I could make it like a narrative. I was thinking how I could make the small amount of what I wrote and explain it into a story of many different ways. I talked about in my first post where I am from, what grade I am in and a little background on my history of online classes. In the book it talks about how the last ten minuets of the opera are what the audience truly cares about, it reflects on the fact that the audience doesn’t care too much about how the opera explained her life, but the fact that if the last ten minuets was not seen or missed, the audience would not be happy. I think that, if I am understanding the point of this post correctly, that we put in our introductions just the important parts in our life and the main things that are usually what is told and want to be known about students. I could have elaborated on saying I am from Cape Cod and could have explained where on the Cape, and all the little details that could go with a narrative. I could have explained why I choose to be a psychology major and what I liked about it, as well as talking more about my time here at this university . All these things would have reflected what a true full narrative would be, but just like the reading stated, “Why do we care so much about those last 10 minutes? I quickly realized that I did not care at all about the length of Violetta’s life. If I had been told that she died at age 27, not age 28 as I believed, the news that she had missed a year of happy life would not have moved me at all, but the possibility of missing the last 10 minutes mattered a great deal. Furthermore, the emotion I felt about the lovers’ reunion would not have changed if I had learned that they actually had a week together, rather than 10 minutes”, showing that yes I could have explained to the class all about my life but the main points are what we all truly care about. Post #3 My introductory post: "Hi! My name is Avery, I'm from Mass. My major is Psychology and I hope to work for a non-profit when I graduate. I've taken two online classes before so I am pretty comfortable with this format. I'm really just open to learning everything that I can within Social Psych, it is a fascinating subject and I'm excited for this class." I think the narrative that I fit into in my post is an 'Happy To Be Here' narrative. The classic person who is "just happy to be here" and does not really have any expectations. I feel like there is always someone like that on reality TV shows or competition shows, because even when they get eliminated they are still "grateful for the experience". Response example: (do not copy it) Example #1 Hi! I like how you linked your post to the "Happy To Be Here" narrative, and I like how you compared it to reality TV shows and how they are still grateful for the experience even if they get kicked off the show. Thanks for sharing. Example #2 I agree, it seems like we all generalized and kept our introductory posts short, which makes it a little difficult to have a nice, detailed narrative. I think the narrative you stated is a perfect fit regarding your original post. I also really like the quote you chose, it helps me understand narratives within a bigger picture (I even just added that quote to my notes, so thank you!)
