Late submissions will be accepted till the end of the semester for a 75% grade deduction. 6. No handwritten solutions will be accepted. 7. File naming format: Last Name, First Name - Earthwork 8. The assignment is valued at 30 possible points. 9. Show all calculations and formulas; state all assumptions. 10. Failure to follow instructions will result in deductions Question 1 – 15 points The objective of this assignment is to help you learn the methods for quantifying earthwork in construction estimating. For the site plan attached on the following page, calculate the volume of cut or fill needed to bring the entire site to an elevation of 90 ft. Assume any cut material can be used for fill and the soil is common earth for your volume adjustments. a) Find the volume of cut or fill in BCY for the site using the Grid method. b) Find the volume of cut or fill in BCY for the site using the Quick-and-Dirty method. c) Compare the results of both methods and indicate which method you think is optimal for this site. (Provide a reason for your answer) d) Using your grid method answer, find the number of haul loads needed to either bring in fill or remove excess soil from the site if one truck has a capacity of 11 cubic yards. You have been assigned the task to determine all the quantities related to the proposed project. The project will consist of both new road construction as well as pavement resurfacing. The entire project is 37 miles long. Of that, the first 12 miles are strictly pavement resurfacing. The next 21 miles will consist of new roadway construction, and the remaining 4 miles will be pavement resurfacing. For the entire project the road is a total of four 12 foot lanes (2 lanes in each direction), with a 10 foot shoulder on each side (4 shoulders total), and a 15 foot grass median. The cross section for the new pavement is 2 inch HMA Surface, 8 inch HMA Binder Course, 10 inch Aggregate Base Course, and Geogrid Subgrade Fabric. The cross section for the new shoulder is 1.5 inch HMA Surface, 6 inch HMA Binder course, 5 inch Aggregate Base Course. The mainline and shoulder new construction will receive the Geogrid Subgrade Fabric. The mainline resurfacing cross section is 1.5 inch HMA Surface and 1 inch HMA Level Binder. While the shoulder resurfacing cross section is 1.5 inch HMA Surface and 0.75 inch HMA Level Binder. The unit weights are as follows: HMA Surface 110 lbs. per inch/SY, HMA Binder 118 lbs. per inch/SY, Level Binder 112 lbs. per inch/SY, and Aggregate Base Course 85 lbs. per inch/SY. Please calculate and tabulate the total quantities required to complete this project in the excel template provided to you: a) b) c) d) e) HMA Surface (Tons) HMA Binder (Tons) HMA Level Binder (Tons) Aggregate Base Course (Tons) Geogrid Subgrade Fabric (SY) Hint: keep meticulous track of the units Dr. Kenneth Sullivan Page 3 of 3
