Description
In the opening pages of Skinner’s “Behaviorism at Fifty” Skinner writes about, mentalistic explanation, animism, and a homunculus. What are these and how are they connected to Skinner’s critique of Descartes’ dualism (though he never mentions Descartes). What is supposed to be wrong with explanation that appeals to a homunculus? By contrast to Descartes’ dualism Skinner proposes that all that needs explaining is behavior and that can be accomplished in a science of behavior. What does such a science look like, what does it amount to? How does Skinner think that such a science, a radical behaviorism, an improvement over dualism? Why do critics of behaviorism think that the/a flaw of behaviorism is that “what might hold for animals did not hold for men, because men could see their mental processes”(Skinner, p.82).
