Good morning ladies and gentlemen. The speech is going to address the aspect of food
safety. In the global domain food safety is a growing concern. The emergence of innovation
technologies that is from packaging techniques, emergence of new agricultural practices and
change in food habits there is the emergence of new issues pertaining the domain of food safety.
The realm of food safety encompasses of three main operations that is the protection of food
supply from harmful contamination, the prevention of the development and the spread of harmful
contamination and finally the effective removal of contaminants and contamination from food
(Mensah & Julien, 2011). Food safety in the 21st century is facing greater challenges.
Change in Demography
it is expected that in the two decades the human population is predicted to reaching 8.5
billion with eighty percent of the population dwelling in developing nations (WHO, 2013). The
increase and the uneven distribution of population formulates a breeding ground for the
likelihood of serious issues pertaining the spectrum of food security and safety, changes in the
ecosystems and environmental degradation among others. Moreover the number of individuals
who would be sixty years of age and above would be on the rise thus increasing the rate of

foodborne diseases. The rise in the general population creates a situation of food insecurity
which increases the likelihood of foodborne diseases.
Environmental Hazards
The increase in biological and chemical contamination in areas where food is produced,
processed and consumed gives rise to the risk of foodborne diseases. The United Nations panel
of climate change has forecasted an impending increase in the rise of temperature which might
hinder the stipulated conditions for food development. In addition to that there is the linkage of
the oceanic phenomena that is El Nino to the prevalence of cholera and dysentery (Fung et al.,
2018). The continuous release of agricultural chemicals and industrial wastes would continue
causing varying climatic conditions. This might result to diminished malnutrition among the
population hence giving rampant increase to foodborne diseases.
