Introduction
Euthanasia was practiced a long time ago in ancient Rome and Greece. In ancient times,
the deliberate action of hastening a person's death was supported by Seneca the Elder, Plato, and
Socrates. The history of euthanasia dates many centuries back. In the U.S, euthanasia society was
founded in 1938 to lobby for the use of euthanasia. During the 17th century, Francis Bacon was the
first person to use the term euthanasia in the medical context. Bacon observed that physicians had
the responsibility to rid the body of physical suffering. To date, the use of euthanasia remains a
highly contentious issue throughout the globe. Euthanasia in the current usage is defined as ‘mercy
killing or the inducement of a painless and quick death of patients in an irreversible coma or
suffering from incurable and painful ailments.' Euthanasia can be involuntary, non-voluntary, or
voluntary. The three categories further fall under active or passive variants depending on the
context in which euthanasia is administered.
Social and Moral Relevance of Euthanasia
The social relevance of euthanasia stems from the fact that it affects the lives of a wider
