This is because water contamination has deadly effects that can at times last for a very long period of time. Spills occur due to accidents in the sea or leakages or intentional discharge. The Arctic Council in 2009 published the Arctic Marine Shipping Assessment. The main idea was to set legislative measures that are necessary to prevent, control and regulated the incidences of disposal and spillage in the oceans. it was necessary so as to save the aquatic eco system.
