Verizon 2:10 PM 66% Back astro 2- scholars-fall 19.doc Course grades will be based on three multiple-choice tests (scantrons required), an observation project, a field trip report, two papers, in-class presentation, participation and optional extra credit: • Tests - The course is divided into 3 parts. There will be a test after each part (see schedule below). · Observing Project – take photographs of the locations of three sunrises or three sunsets at intervals of approximately one month during the semester. These three horizon images should be taken in weeke 28 and 14. In the final report you will include the three pictures and one paragraph description of your conclusions which should be submitted to me in week 15. • Field Trip – You must choose a field trip such as the Griffith Observatory in Griffith Park, and discuss it with me before going. Write a five- page paper describing what you learned. Must contain 3 pages of text, two pages of pictures, including a picture of yourself taken on the field trip. The report should be submitted to me in wet Soiontific Paner Analysis - write a five page analysis of a recent astronomy paper on PLANETARY ASTRONOMY published in the Journal Science during the past 5 years. The topic should be discussed with me before you start. The final report should be submitted to me in week 10. • Research Paper - write a five-page paper on a PLANETARY ASTRONOMY topic of your choosing that you have researched using the internet or library. Your proposed paper topic should be discussed with me before you start. The final paper should be submitted to me in week 16. • In-class Presentation - prepare and give a short, 5-minute PowerPoint presentation in week 15. If you are uncomfortable giving a live presentation you can prepare an audio narrated PowerPoint presentation instead or discuss with me.
