Read, "Demarginalizing the intersection of race and sex" by Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw. The article is fairly dry (it’s about legal questions and court cases!), but incredibly clear, concise, and useful for framing how we in WGS need to think about identity and discrimination. The term/concept has become a part of even mainstream feminist discourse recently.As you read, keep in mind: Intersectionality is a framework for thinking about how power (in terms of legal discrimination, but also the power to represent, politically) operates along multiple axes of identity Race, gender, but also sexuality, class, immigration status, national origin, religion, etc., etc. Intersectionality can help us: Understand the complexities of oppression Unpack layers of privilege and examine how privilege operates Home in on how certain people and populations are silenced and excluded due to being “multiply burdened” Productively critique political and cultural movements that don’t account for the complex ways power and identities converge, intersect, and interact Once you’ve finished reading, consider a critique of intersectionality. This (ultimately conservative) position levies that Crenshaw’s concept promotes the idea of an “Oppression Olympics.” This is “a characterization of marginalization as a competition to determine the relative weight of the overall oppression of individuals or groups, often by comparing race, gender, socioeconomic status or disabilities, in order to determine who is the worst off, and the most oppressed. The characterization often arises within debates about the ideological values of identity politics, intersectionality, and social privilege"
