Description

Our planet is experiencing an increase in Desertification. This is happening because of our planet’s growing population and use of fossil fuels. In this assignment, you will learn about Desertification, and how it influences our lives and global community.

For this assignment, you will be provided with two assignment choices. You will select the one that you prefer, and complete the tasks listed for that choice. View this instructional video, then download the SCI201 Worksheet and complete the tasks associated with your assignment choice.

Please submit your assignment.

For assistance with your assignment, please use your text, Web resources, and all course materials.

Science Planet: Desertification and the soil

Soil refers to the thin layer that covers the earth, site for intense activities, and home
to a rich ecosystem such as insects, bacteria, and worms. It is a hotbed for living organisms as
it ensures that every living this is dependent on it for survival. The bacteria in the soil are
responsible for digesting minerals, animal matter, and plant matter and convert these to
nutrients that are needed for the growth of plants. The plants are then used as source of food
for human beings as well as animals. Generally, it takes 500 years to form 2.5cm of soil but
takes only a few years for this to be destroyed. Soil is vulnerable in dry and arid areas since
shortage of water makes the balance of soil and water fragile.
Desertification results from human activities, and thus it is contrary to the belief that it
is a natural process. The actions of humans have led to soil degradation, which threatens a
third of the land. The fragility of the soil in arid and dry lands is due to the lack of balance
between soil and water. Human activities cause desertification. One, hyper-productive
farming methods such as use of chemical fertilizers to increase farm yields are bad for the
soil since it weakens the living organisms that cause soil fertility. The hyperactive farming
methods are causing fertile lands to be desserts. Two, regular ploughing causes the soil to dry
out and for it to form compacts. Three, overgrazing and deforestation strip the vegetative
color of ...
