OPINION ON BIG DATA

Contemporary businesses have continued to invent ways in which they can better their
operations and also realize their goals. One of the strategies that are increasingly being embraced
is the reliance on data mining to predict outcomes. It enhances increase returns, improves
customer relationships, and also reduces the risks, among other factors. Most commercial
organizations analyze microblogging updates to establish an opinion detector for data mining the
social media lode and extract information that could be helpful in policymaking, marketing,
understanding emerging trends, and attitudes. The paper seeks to give personal thought about an
article “why big data is not enough”.
Social platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have enhanced people to share their
opinions widely (Chai & Shih, 2016). There is a lot of information to be mined from such
platforms. One might get a collective opinion on almost all services, products, and trends.
Marketing mavens are always looking for such information to increase sales and consumption of
their products. This shows the importance of data mining in the contemporary world. Facebook
and Google, among other web giants, have transformed the marketing and advertising strategies
through the use of data mining. It tracks the user’s data, such as what one is interested in. These
companies may also sell the data to anyone who can afford it. These inform why most internet
users receive more targeted advertisements. In addition to these, it shows that data has more
value for data mining when it is voluminous and in one place. These are commonly referred to as
big data. The information collected is further integrated, where it is mixed with data from other
sources without the consent of the end-users.
Today, data collection is happening through various dimensions, which is not familiar to
users. For example, some applications take not on group preferences, but in the real sense, are
collecting details about the users. These apps use data analytics to analyze comments to collect
data about us. They are even capable of determining the user’s behavior from their textual
analysis. For example, it’s possible to correlate how sad or depressed one might be though
analyzing their internet interactions.
Some countries, such as China, track their people’s social reputation. Such governments
are capable of mining phone activities, application activities, and financial transactions. They
monitor each person at a micro-level. There exist online fun applications that encourage users to
submit their photos of some years apart. Security experts asserted that this was a mischievous
strategy that aimed at collecting a massive amount of data to train algorithms on a large scale.
This makes web developers' photo library commercially valuable. This is because if one
submitted their valuable photo, a machine would be able to breach more layers of user privacy.
Much of the data mining that I have been discussing is on training recognition
algorithms, also referred to as machine learning. Machine learning is one of the steering factors
towards automation. For example, organizations have increasingly embraced intelligent
machines that are automated. This could easily replace many jobs, especially for low skilled...
