In “The Patients Were Saved; That’s Why the Families Are Suing,” an article by Paula Span
dated April 10, 2017 explores three lawsuits. In the three cases, it shows how hospitals that
worked hard to ensure their patients survived ended up being sued for not letting them to die.
Usually, it is expected that hospitals should revive patients. However, based on the nature of the
lawsuits herein, the dynamics have changed.
The first case is between Maryland General Hospital, the defendant, and Weisman family, the
plaintiff. On August 29, 2013, the medical staff at Maryland General Hospital realized Beatrice
Weisman was experiencing cardiac arrest. They resuscitated her and she survived. However,
together with her husband, they had drafted advance directives whereby William, her husband,
had to make medical conditions if her condition deteriorated. On the contrary, the staff
performed Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) that resulted in broken ribs and collapsed lungs.
