Here is my outline

Florida has taken lead in the fight against invasive insects that are potentially dangerous to natural plants and agriculture operations. Identifying such pests is vital for the control process to be successful. “No other state intercepts as many potentially invasive insects as Florida” Mrs. Amanda Hodges director of the Doctor of Plant Medicine at UF stated. This is at a high alert level. The invasive insects are threatening multi million dollar crops.

Body Point:

One factor that I find disturbing is the amount of new species that are introduced to our natural areas and plants. That could potently give our crops and native plants diseases.” Florida gets 2.5 new insects every month, Some are good , some are bad, and some are harmless but we need people in the field reporting them as early as possible” Hodges stated. If we don’t correctly identify new invasive species there could be major loss in crops and spread diseases to our plants.

Body Point:

A promising factor is that education and workshops are being provided to the public. Participants received a laminated guide to invasive pests covering news worthy pests (Parsons 2019) The first detectors program helps the gardeners and farmers correctly identify these invasive species. Some insects look so a like that you would need to look at them under a magnifying glass. These work help with the fight against invasive species.

Conclusion:

“Not all insects are bad - many are beneficial” Hodges states. It is very important to be able to identify insects. Florida First Detectors which is a multi-agency effort to control these invasive insects are planning events and workshops each year for the public to be more aware. The more awareness there is the less chance of an invasive species to do harm to our agricultural operations and crops.

Running head: FERTILIZING TAMPA BAY 1 Fertilizing Tampa Bay A Natural Sciences-Based Essay Student Sample St. Petersburg College Commented [AN1]: The title page should come first. Notice the header at the top as well. FERTILIZING TAMPA BAY 2 Abstract The article “The Real Cost of Fertilizer” by Victoria Parsons exemplifies that the environmental affair at risk here is the high amount of nitrogen, which is found in fertilizer, that is being deposited directly into Tampa Bay. Because of this, thousands of fish and natural wildlife found in the bay are killed, therefore threatening the health of the water as well as the economy of Florida. The state has a Medium Alert crisis on its plate as it must decide how to combat this growing pollution from fertilizer before it becomes critical. Commented [AN2]: The abstract should come next and serve as a short summary of the forthcoming essay. FERTILIZING TAMPA BAY 3 Fertilizing Tampa Bay Commented [AN3]: The actual essay starts on the third page with a title. An urgent problem facing Florida has come to Tampa Bay’s attention. The crucial issue is whether or not the state will be able to drastically reduce the amount of toxic waste, mainly unused nitrogen, in time to save the natural environment in South Florida and the Gulf Coast. This same nitrogen is also an ominous threat to the vital habitat that the city of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater are based around. The fish and wildlife living in and around the bay are directly affected by the extra nitrogen and are crying for help (Parsons, 2017). This issue is a Commented [AN4]: The Introduction provides a cited summary of the chosen article. medium alert level because if quantities of nitrogen do not continue to lower in Tampa Bay, the waterways will not only become toxic to our wildlife, but also threaten to damage local industry. Commented [AN5]: The Alert Level is stated in the thesis at the end of the Introduction. To start, the most obvious problem is that natural wildlife in Tampa Bay is being harmed. Commented [AN6]: A Transition leads the reader into the first body point. The root cause of this predicament is found in the overwhelming amount of nitrogen found in the Commented [AN7]: The first point covers one disturbing aspect of the article. fertilizer. In fact, “... if nitrogen levels increase – from fertilizer, wastewater and industrial plants, atmospheric deposition or even animal waste – algae grow more quickly and upset the natural balance. Along with clouding water so that sun is blocked from sea grasses, algae consumes high levels of oxygen as it decays, often causing massive fish kills in summer months” (Parsons, 2011, para. 23). High nitrogen equals algae blooms. Algae blooms result in noxious Commented [AN8]: A strong quote (APA) verifies the disturbing aspect. waterways that no swimmer, local or tourist, would swim resulting in a direct hit on the leading industry in the state. Poisonous water also makes for dead fish which leads to unhappy fishermen and directly affects their commerce. The Bay Area is realizing that environmental devastation is no longer theory. An economy that was once a booming Disneyland for fishermen and wildlife is on its way to becoming a barren wasteland. Moving forward, the most promising aspect is Pinellas County becoming involved in this plight, so some authoritative body has stepped in to intervene. To illustrate, “Recognizing the Commented [AN9]: The writer uses the PIE Method to explain the quote. Commented [AN10]: A Transition leads the reader into the second body point. Commented [AN11]: The second point covers one promising aspect of the article. FERTILIZING TAMPA BAY 4 problem, Pinellas County voted to implement the state’s most stringent fertilizer regulations in 2010 (Parsons, 2011, para. 8). While this limitation does not appear to be tantamount, it reflects Commented [AN12]: A strong quote (APA) verifies the promising aspect. the obvious problem is being noticed and that the community is one step closer to cleaner and healthier waters. If the local government continues the restrictions, the majority of nitrogen going into the bay via fertilizer will be minimized. With the reductions of the waste, the algae will die back, letting sea grasses regrow, resulting in natural balances and creating a healthy home for the manatees, crabs, fish, and even birds. Overall, this is currently a medium alert level for these local counties because if continued restrictions on nitrogen are not maintained, Tampa Bay and its wildlife will become increasingly harmed. However, steps are being taken to resolve the dilemma, which is a good sign and why this issue is medium and not high. From here, government officials must continue moving forward to protect Tampa Bay. Commented [AN13]: The writer uses the PIE Method to explain the quote. Commented [AN14]: One final Transition leads the reader into the conclusion. Commented [AN15]: Notice how the writer explains why the alert level is “Medium.” FERTILIZING TAMPA BAY 5 References Parsons, V. (2017, April 4). The real cost of fertilizer.
