Description

Assignment 2 - Survey Weighting

Due Wednesday, October 16 (Canvas)

Purpose: For students to begin becoming accustomed to conducting survey analysis with weights in Google Sheets (or other spreadsheet software).

Expectations:

  1. Analyze two questions from the Pew Research study using the provided survey weights, presenting the results in a simple table and discussing your findings. Do not use variable q1 (Donald Trump approval)

Procedure:

  1. Pick a survey question. Use the basic survey analysis tutorial AND the survey weighting tutorial, stepping through each part of the process to analyze the data. The codebook for the data can be found here. Do the following:
    1. Analyze both the unweighted and weighted data, providing counts and percentages for both in a table (see below).
    2. Discuss whether and how much the weighted vs. unweighted data differed.
  2. Pick another survey question.
  3. Explore the weighting applied to individuals. You only have to do 3a and 3b once, because the weights are the same across questions.
    1. Find an individual within the data who has a low weight (something below 1.0) and examine their demographic characteristics (age, sex, education, etc). Can you tell why they have a low weight?
    2. Find an individual within the data with a high weight (something above 1.0) and examine their demographic characteristics. Can you tell why they have a high weight?

SURVEY WEIGHTING

Survey weighting is one of the core components in survey sampling. Each unit in the data
is attached a certain weight which is used to get estimates that represent the whole population. In
this survey, two questions were used to find the given weight. The first question is Q2 which asks
that “All in all, are you satisfied or dissatisfied with the way things are going in this country
today?” The second question in this analysis is Q3 which asks “Do you approve or disapprove of
the way Paul Ryan is handling his job as speaker of the house? The tables of below give the analysis
of the unweighted and weighted data for both questions. It also gives the counts and percentages
for the ...
