Hofstede identified six dimensions of national culture that could be used to identify
one person’s culture from another. These dimensions are: power distance index (high versus
low), masculinity versus femininity, indulgence versus restraint, long-term versus short-term
orientation, individualism versus collectivism, and uncertainty avoidance index (high versus
low) (Williams, 2019). A high power distance index (PDI) is indicative of a society where
hierarchy is well established and respected while a low degree in the PDI shows a society
where people question authority and makes efforts to distribute power. According to
Hofstede, women in feminine societies are characterized by modest and caring views while
masculine societies have women who are openly competitive and assertive, albeit less than
men. The indulgence vs. restraint dimension refers to amount of freedom different social
norms allow their members to fulfill their desires. An indulgent society allows for free
gratification while its counterpart is more restrictive and its norms on the fulfillment of
human desires are stricter (Williams, 2019). The long-term versus short-term orientation
(LTO) dimension looks at the connection of past, current, and future actions and challenges.
A society that has a short-term orientation degree honors and values tradition and is less
likely to be developed; its counterpart is adaptive and pragmatic when handling challenges. In
the dimension of individualism vs. collectivism (IDV) Hofstede explored the different ways
in which members of a society are integrated into groups where individualistic societies are
likely to have loose ties with an emphasis on “I” versus “we” (Williams, 2019). On the other
hand, its counterpart has closely knit groups that support each other during conflicts. Finally,
