Ten Sectors Covered in the OSH Management System
1. Agriculture forestry and fishing
Agriculture forestry and fisheries have the most hazards of all sectors of
the economy. It entails agricultural farms, forest activities such as tree planting
and timber harvesting, and fishing activities, including rearing fish in fish ponds.
Many of the workers in this sector are female, especially in Asia and Africa, and
always suffer occupational accidents and ill health every year. Also has the
highest percentage of child laborer in the world exposed to these health hazards.
Agriculture accounts for a sizable portion of the employed population in
the developing countries. Several labor protection issues crop up from this sector
and the associated sub-sectors. For instance, the industry is identified as one of
the most treacherous sectors when it comes to workers' health and safety (FAO,
2019). FAO estimates that nearly 170,000 workers within the agriculture sector
get killed while at work, each year. Cases of child labor are also very high,
estimated at 59% (FAO, 2019). These are the children aged between 5 and 17.
The vast majority provide unpaid labor as they are thought to assist the family.
More importantly, these children get exposed to hazardous work, which poses a
risk to their health and safety (FAO, 2019).
This sector uses machinery more and human labor in subsectors where
there is no machinery invention (FAO, 2018). These workers require protection in

the machines by being given proper protective wear and those operating in a
hazardous environment where they must apply medicines and chemicals. Pregnant
mothers or nursing women and their reproductive health considered. Selfemployed farmers should also be educated and catered for on the safety measure
to use.
2: Construction sector
The construction sectors involve all the casual laborers, engineers, security
guards, and any other person working in a construction site. Like agriculture
sectors, it is also one of the most hazardous areas. Without following the safety
measures can result in even the instant death of the workers. While ensuring they
achieve good designs and the implementation of construction projects,
organizations should also ensure workers are protected from accidents, harmful
effects, and diseases (Lingard & Rowlinson, 2005). A lot of activities are carried
out in the construction, and many of the actives require machinery owing to the
continuous advancement in technology in this sector. Institutions should use
proper protective gear and clothes to stop them from any severe injuries in case of
an accident and protect them from any health-related hazards. Occupational health
safety systems need to be put in place in the world from developing countries to

quarries and underground mines, for example, coal mines. Opencast mines use
machinery is developed and human activities in developing countries. All those
working in the open mines need protection from accidents, health effects, and
diseases from the open cast mines activities. The responsible authorities should
ensure that the open mines adhere to designs to avoid caving in, the necessary
technology used, and safe operations conducted in the mines. Underground mines
more so coals mines are the most hazardous, and proper safety and health
measures in place (Gunningham, 2007). Workers in coal mines need protection
from fires, electrical hazards, machinery, water inrushes, and environmental
hazards. Workers need proper education and protective equipment on how to
handle coal during mining and transportation. Training on how to prepare for
emergencies and how to handle hygiene issues is necessary.
