Description
Tasks:
- Select a site that is in the Eugene/Springfield metropolitan area, but not on campus, that you deem to be a monument—a construction that is somehow outstanding, notable, or especially interesting.
- Consider what makes this site exceptional. What is its value? Perhaps the site exemplifies one of Riegl’s values. Perhaps it holds a significance that Riegl did not consider. Make sure to study your site in person.
- Write and argument-driven academic essay in which you articulate the value of your site. Your goal is to persuade your reader of your site’s value(s). Make sure to clearly articulate your main point in a thesis statement and to support your argument with specific evidence. For example, if you are arguing for aesthetic value, your essay should highlight the particular details of the building that make it beautiful. Your paper should be approximately 600 words.
- Create a visual statement of your site that makes the same argument as your paper, but using images rather than words. Your visual statement should be crafted by you—there should be clear evidence of your creation, manipulation, and/or intervention in the final product.

Architectural Analysis of Hult Center for the Performing Arts
The architectural analysis focuses on the Hult Center for the Performing Arts,
which is in Eugene, Oregon. The building was constructed using funds that were generated from
community voters in a campaign designed to attract the population in the Eugene-Springfield
area. The center was designed by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates based in New York.
Pfeiffer and his colleagues, Hardy and Holzman, won the contract that was highly contested.
Through their efforts, they saw that the groundbreaking in 1979 was done as per their
outstanding design until it was completed in 1982 (Hult Center for the Performing Arts, 1). The
architectural building is iconic, and the constant maintenance practice is an aspect that matches
Riegl’s use value, which has enabled the center to host diverse visual art performances.
