Emotional behavior in the workplace
Emotional labor is defined as the process of controlling feelings and expressions by a
worker during the interaction with customers, superiors or even his or her colleagues. Recently,
there has been a shift of economies from manufacturing industries to service-based industries
thus making the employees from different organizations being forced to manage their emotions
to meet their employers demand. The service industry contributes to more than 70% of the gross
domestic income in the united states (Chang, Jeud &Kim , 2018). In this study, I will develop
and test components of emotional labor based on various organizations. I define the various
types of emotional labor that is congruence and discordance. And finally, I describe a survey on
the emotional labor in various workplace setups. This research paper has been composed
together through research on emotional labor at the workplace and a conducted survey.
Emotional labor.
Emotion is an integral part of human life. Emotional labor requires that workers
manipulate their genuine feelings to display emotions that are in line with the job description and
expectation. The concept of emotional labor helps us illuminate the hidden injuries in various
workplaces (Hochschild, 2012). The emotional labor is displayed through various means
including telephones, emails, and face to face conversations in the workplace. Research has
shown that emotional labor is a core component of employees' outcomes in an organization
(Mesmer-Magnus &. Dechurch,2011). Research has shown that emotional stress affects the
facial expression of a worker and physiological body behavior. According to Hochschild,
emotional labor is composed of three criteria. These are: they require face to face interaction
with the public, secondly, they require the production of an emotional state with the client or the
