and social construct definitions of disability.
The following are the key differences between the two types of models.
The medical model articulates that disability is an abnormality or deficiency while the
social model articulates that disability is a difference, just as age, persons gender, or a
race.
The medical model articulates that to have a disability is bad while the social model
articulates that to have a disability is different. It is a fragment of who you are.
The medical model articulates that disability is your problem and is in you while the
social model articulates that disability exists in the interface between society and the
individual. Disability matters stalk from a person with a disability trying to function in an
inaccessible society.
In the medical model, disability is treated using a medical treatment or by trying to brand
the person to seem less disabled or normal, while in the social model articulates that the
remedy is the interaction amongst the society and the individual. The issue of a person
with disability vanishes when society changes.
