LEADERSHIP ASSESSMENT

Leadership Assessment

Leadership is the process in which a person or persons referred to as leader/s direct a group
of people. Leadership differs depending on the individual as while one leader can choose to be a
transformational leader, another person can opt to be a transactional leader. The main objective of
leadership is to promote the coherent and cohesive operation of an organization as opposed to
exercise coercive power over the individuals being led.

Personal Model of Leadership

My model of leadership is pegged on the idea that the leader should not only lead but
should also be a role model for the individuals being led. I also believe that a leader is not a dictator;
instead, a leader is a servant, and leadership as a concept is a calling. The transformational model
and the servant leader model have informed my model of leadership. The transformational model
dictates that a leader is to work with a group of people to identify a needed change, create a vision
that guides the implementation of the change, and motivate the persons in the team to implement
the change. The model focuses on the morale and performance of the persons being led, and it also
argues that both the leader and the led should work together to enhance the each other’s morale.
Transformational leadership, like the path-goal theory, achieves its objectives by ensuring that the
persons working under the leader are motivated and satisfied which increases their morale. The
servant leadership theory, on the other hand, alters the thought that leaders need to be dictators.
The theory argues for leaders who are servants as opposed to authoritarians. The model supports
aspects such as ethics, trust, and cooperation between the leaders and the persons being led as
opposed to a chain of command or a power battle.

The leader is called upon to serve, and the focus must be on the people being led as opposed
to the leader gaining power. The servant-leader is expected to have attributes such as
conceptualization, empathy, be a steward, listen to the people he serves, a commitment to grow
the people he serves depending on the field he works in or the work they are expected to perform,
have foresight, and be persuasive among others. Achieving a balance between transformational
leadership and servant leadership is essential as servant leaders might focus on the individuals and
forget the needs of the organization that they represent. As such, a leader who portrays both
transformational and servant leadership attributes can focus on both the persons being led and the
organization itself.

Changes

The course gave me a new perspective on leadership. Initially, I believed that leadership
was cast in stone in that there was a single way to achieve good leadership and to define the term
leadership. However, the course exposed me to theories l...
