In the article titled "The untold story behind Fiji's astonishing gold medal", the influence
of culture on the participation of men and women in rugby is discussed. Besnier & Broewnell
(2016), state that while the men’s rugby team is supported by both the government and the society,
the women’s rugby team is not supported because women are considered unfit for participation in
rugby in Fiji. The culture of the indigenous people in Fiji discourages women from playing rugby
but facilitate men's participation in it. This story of Fiji is typical of how culture defines the identity
and roles of people in society based on gender, thus providing unequal opportunities for men and
women. Societies subscribe to certain cultural conventions that define gender roles and identities
through biases, stereotypes, taboos, discrimination, social prescriptions among other ways.
Cultural conventions define the identity of men and women through values and norms. The
cultural conventions prescribe the values that men and women can identify with (Necalaesei,
2015). These values can then shape the gendered identity. For example, in my culture women are
expected to value humility and passivity whenever relating to a member of the opposite sex. It is
thus a cultural convention that women respect men’s opinions and consider their decisions as being
final. This convention and values shape the identity of women in my culture as humble, passive
and respectful.
As noted by Necalaesei (2015) cultural conventions set the norms that members of a
particular gender should observe. In my culture, for example, cultural conventions require men to
be bold and authoritative in decision making. ...
