One of the things that the materials covered this week in the class prompted me to
consider is global civilization. As the global population continues to grow, urbanization also
continues to increase. Cities have been considered the main centers of culture, learning, and
innovation throughout history (Brunn et al., 2016). As a result, most urban countries are
associated with most human development and tend to be the richest. Currently, more than half of
the world’s population lives in cities across the globe. Unsurprisingly, much of the world’s GDP
comes from the cities. However, cities consume most of the world's resources. As Khanna (2016)
points out, global urbanization has resulted in industrial integration in many regions of the world.
Unlike the past few decades where only a few isolated cities surrounded by large uncivilized
hinterland existed, more and more networks of cities are developing in different regions around
the globe. Hence, the high rate of urbanization promises to create more global civilization.
As cities continue to develop into megacities, the boundaries between the rural, suburban,
and urban areas are increasingly blurred. This is especially true in the more industrialized
countries where urban sprawl is fostered by automobile transportation (Brunn et al., 2016).
Therefore, as cities continue to expand, we are likely to have many urbanized areas where land
use, transport, and building predominate beyond the existing political boundaries of towns and
cities. Consequently, we are having more urban agglomerations where urban areas that border
cities are spatially clustered into a large urban area (Brunn et al., 2016). There is increased
