The early years of adolescence can often be viewed with changes in school context, relationships with family members, and changes in developmental processing. When looking at the changes that are taking place during this stage, frequently, academic performance can negatively be affected; however, at the same time, long-term academic performance increases (Hill & Tyson, 2009). In situations in which families, parental involvement, and the relationship between family members and the school have been significant, achievement tends to be much higher across the elementary and secondary levels (Hill & Tyson, 2009).

Hill & Tyson (2009) analyzed the available research that has been completed on parental involvement in middle school to determine whether parental involvement is directly related to achievement; if so, what types of parental involvement have the greatest success. During the analysis completed by Hill & Tyson (2009), they looked at 50 studies and found that parental involvement was positively associated with achievement. Parental involvement can include interactions with the schools, such as attending parent-teacher conferences, volunteering and being physically present in the school, and reinforcing at home what has been learned and enforced in school.

The authors conducted a meta-analysis on the existing research on parental involvement in middle school to determine whether and which types of parental involvement are related to achievement. Across the 50 studies, parental involvement was positively associated with success, with the exception of parental help with homework (Hill & Tyson, 2009). The involvement that reflected academic socialization and encouraged the highest amount of academic success resulted in the most active positive association with academic achievement (Hill & Tyson, 2009).

The study that I chose utilizes a quantitative approach, according to Anderson (2006), as it "generates reliable population-based and generalizable data and is well suited to establishing cause-and-effect relationships" (para. 5). The purpose of quantitative research is to provide data that is numerical such as statistics, percentages, etc. The researcher completing quantitative research methods knows in advance what they are seeking to achieve by completing their study (Anderson, 2006).

The study hypothesized that parental impact greatly affected school achievement during the early adolescent years. The independent variables consisted of the gathering of parental involvement and the relationship between parental involvement and student achievement (Hill & Tyson, 2009). On the other hand, the dependent variables consisted of academic achievement, through class grades, grade point average, results of standardized testing, and other tests designed to measure the achievements (Hill & Tyson, 2009).

This type of research method is useful in that it starts with a hypothesis, or proposed explanation made based on limited information while utilizing surveys and interviews to gather supporting data. Quantitative research is based on numerical data with an emphasis on objectivity and the use of statistics or data collected through the completion of the surveys and interviews. Numerical data is then gathered and generalized to explain trends or phenomena.

I concur with you that Hill, & Tyson, (2009) utilizes a systematic approach to conduct the
research. By following a systematic approach, the researchers make the research methodology
more identifiable. Indeed, Hill & Tyson (2009) conduct ...
