The problem of evil essentially arises from the contradiction between the notion of the
existence of natural and moral evil on one hand and the omnibenevolence and omnipotence
attributes of God on the other (Teubner, 2017). Because evil would not exist if God had both
attributes, it means that there is a problem. St. Augustine was aware of this persistent problem
and made significant attempts to address it. In exploring the problem of evil, he took three
approaches. First, he held that evil cannot be said to exist at all because it is privation (Teubner,
2017). The second argument was that the apparent imperfection in creation disappears when
viewed as a whole. Thirdly, he argued that the moral evil and the suffering that accompanies it
originates from the free choice of will. That is why suffering is considered punishment (Teubner,
2017).
