3. Did you face any discrimination within the university or in the city? Did you have
to deal with stereotypes associated with her/his nationality? (Emphasize that they do not
need to provide the names of any individual or organization or university office).
The Brazilian student said she experienced some form of discrimination in social places.
Some students would not freely accept her in discussion groups because of her language. Some
students thought she was 'lazy' or 'not well educated' since she was unable to communicate with
them in their language. She said she was uncomfortable speaking in front of people as they
would laugh at her. She notes that being a foreigner, she could be easily identified. She always
doubted herself, but she accepted the change finally. Associating with people who seem
comfortable associating with locals was a challenge to her. She also noted she found it difficult
to get a place to work while studying because she was a foreigner. However, she managed to get
work but through a friend referral.
Although it was a stressful experience, she has managed to change the perception of
many around her. She has since made friends within the school, and at the place she works when
she is not studying. Her character, she says, makes her different from what people think of her.
She learned the language and culture of Canada, making it easier to mingle with people better.
The other students from Korea seem to be a little more comfortable now since she has
