Description

For this assignment, you will begin thinking about your major themes and your literature review. This should be a three- to five-page (approximately 700-1000 word) annotated bibliography of three to five sources. Please note that each source should have about a page dedicated to it. Select the academic articles that you want to look at on three themes relevant to your broader topic. For instance, if you want to study education as a major topic, you might be interested in family dynamics, gender, and immigration. You will center your writing around these themes, using academic research to build a case and make points about the state of your topic in American culture. To complete this assignment, list your sources and summarize the article information below the citation. You want to summarize the entire article, from their methods to the findings to the conclusion. Highlight major points that fit within the topic that you have chosen. Please note that your articles should be published since 2005. Additionally, based on our discussion of methods and information presented in your Social Science Research text, assess the methods of the articles you have chosen as part of your

My topic is about pop culture under the American society. I will attach my brainstorm paper below and here is my TA's comments. "It's unclear what your three themes would be. Consider looking at peer-reviewed research to see how other scholars have talked about pop culture. One theme might be how some media (tv show, movie, book) becomes part of pop culture. Neither of the sources you listed seem to be peer reviewed. The slides from the first class has tips on finding peer reviewed sources. If you're using the campus databases there's usually a purple icon that indicates it is peer reviewed.

The term was coined during the Industrial Revolution, where younger people who migrated from rural to urban areas adopted a different culture to set them apart from their parents and bosses. Over time, the definition of the term has evolved to incorporate new development in various fields, including mass media and music. Popular culture encompasses several categories which may include; entertainment, fashion, technology, news, sports, and way of speaking (Fedorak, 2019). Moreover, popular culture tends to be specific to societies. For example, America may have a different culture from the UK or Kenya. However, with the advent of social media, it has become easier for a trend to spread across the whole world. In the process, it unites people to form one culture. Popular culture influences society in numerous ways, and has become a significant unifying factor. The topic of popular culture would make a good subject of discussion due to the role it (pop culture) plays in shaping society. In fact, it has become a central factor in shaping and influencing virtually all aspects of life, from social to political. Due to the large population of the youth who are often the proponents of pop culture, the trends and innovations associated with the movement tend to spread far and wide to become a common denominator among the young people (Fedorak, 2019). As such, it is not possible to ignore its influence and effect not only to the youth but the whole world. Further, this topic will shed light on how popular culture grows over time and the factors that enhance its evolvement. This is more so important because most of the things that define popular culture, such as technology, evolve rapidly, meaning a trend that is popular today can be obsolete tomorrow. POPULAR CULTURE 3 Popular culture is quite a significant topic in society for the reason it is inextricably entwined with society itself. In any case, society is based on culture, which is the way people live and interact with each other. Therefore, the topic referenced here can help to understand how the adoption of new trends affect the setup of society and how it favors or disfavors all involved parties. In a world that is evolving daily due to technological advancement and factors such as globalization, having knowledge about popular culture can help in getting more insight into the effects of pop culture on different societies owing that cultures are inherently different. Storey (2016) notes that popular culture has redefined society in a tremendous way. For instance, he notes that manufacturers are using pop culture to market products and expand their markets. Furthermore, the culture has become a tool of protest, and in most cases, demonstrations that use it tend to have the most significant impact. Therefore, popular culture and society are inseparable. Several reasons drew me to the idea of discussing popular culture. One, it is rapidly gaining influence across all fronts, from art to politics; as such, one cannot just ignore it. Moreover, I was intrigued by how culture evolves, and I wanted to have in-depth knowledge about the factors that contribute to this development. On a subjective note, I am enthusiastic about it because it represents youth, development, and being up-to-date with everything that is happening around me. Nonetheless, learning about popular culture can help one to know how society is bound to change in the future. POPULAR CULTURE 4 References Fedorak, S. (2019). Askin & Mauskapf (2017) investigate what it takes for music artists to be successful
in their craft amidst the high competition in the industry. The authors, therefore, attempt to
determine why some artists are more successful than others in the context of particular
cultural products. Their realization is that the popular success of such products primarily
depends on their position in feature space. For example, the position of a song in a
countdown chart is influenced by how well majority of people are familiar with it according
to the alignment of features with popular culture. The authors also point out that the idea of
popular media platforms such as social media and the Billb...
