Ashley Majors was the hotel GM, and she was just beginning the weekly
department heads’ meeting. Almost before she could say, “Good morning,”
the questions began:
“What about the new hotel across town? They’re stealing our employees!”
said the food and beverage director.
“One of my housekeepers said she will receive twenty-five cents more per
hour to work there!” said the executive housekeeper.
“And . . . they’re offering transportation reimbursement for local employees
and free bus tokens for the employees they recruit from the suburbs,” said the
front-office manager. “We’ve got to raise our employees’ pay, or we won’t
be able to keep anyone. I say forget any increases in our benefits package this
