Description

Describe one of the IOM Core Competencies (CCs), and the impact it has on patient care outcomes.
Research the CC in peer-reviewed, scholarly sources (at least 3 sources in addition to your text) and reflect upon these articles to form an independent opinion of how to best improve patient outcomes by increasing awareness of the CCs you have chosen.

Describe three ways in which you can positively impact your clinical practice and patient care outcomes with your chosen CCs.

Think about the current challenges in health care delivery and report on potential barriers to implementing the strategies you have suggested.

There are no right or wrong answers, only more or less reflection and research.
Follow APA guidelines for paper format, grammar & language. Cite in-text and list references from scholarly and peer-reviewed sources. Length: 4-6 pages of text (not including the abstract, title page, references, etc).

Core Competencies

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has come up with five main competencies (CCs) that
Healthcare practitioners should learn and understand as they work in a healthcare facility. In the
past, healthcare practitioners were only concentrating on patient-centered care, where they were
only concerned with ensuring patients are taken care of at all times in order to ensure they
recover. However, researchers discovered that this competency is only caring about a patient
without considering other stakeholders and they, therefore, come up with other competencies that
ensure all parties are taken care of. These Competencies include Patient-Centered Care,
Teamwork and Collaboration, Evidence-based Practice, Quality Improvement, Informatics and
Safety (added by QSEN). These competencies are useful in ensuring that relative, nurses and
patients understand the part they should take in improving patient’s condition.
The Chosen competence for this paper is Evidence-Based practice, which is a strategy
that aims at improving the treatment process where high-quality scientific studies evidence can
be acquired and translated into the best practical decisions that help in improving patients' health.
Evidence-based practice is significant for patients as it provides the most effective patient care.
This is because it allows nurses to offer one on one patient care, as indicated in the scientific
research (Saunders & Vehviläinen-Julkunen, 2016). Nurses ensure that they even include patient
care researches, randomized controlled samples, and collected patient information while relating
to the interventions that are indicated to effecti...
