Difference between Emergent reading and Conventional reading
Emergent reading refers to all the actions, understanding, and misunderstanding in which
learners are engaged in print materials. Emergent reading encompasses the skills, knowledge,
and attitudes that a child develops about reading and writing from birth throughout childhood
(Wang, 2019). Emergent reading includes such aspects as oral language, understanding print,
basic alphabet knowledge, and early phonological awareness. Emergent reading is highly
influenced by the environment of a child, including the parents. Emergent reading is the first
stage in reading development and might be affected by literacy in the parents, among other
issues. A child starts acquiring skills and tools necessary for reading as early as a few months in
development. Emergent reading usually influences the mastery of mastery skills later in life. On
the other hand, conventional reading involves reading and writing that follows a certain format
by using standard conventions (Mack, 2017). Conventional reading is influenced by the
basement that is laid by emergent reading in a child. It involves the use of vocabulary, fluency,
and understanding of a connected text. At this level, a child can use skills to independently
construct a message that can be interpreted by other readers.
In preschool, emergent reading is very critical. Emergent reading involves the teachers to
attend to every kind according to the level of skills and progresses with time as children get more
knowledge. The first stage in emergent reading will involve print awareness, which is the most
crucial stage in child development (Lysaker & Hopper, 2015). Children in the early days in
school are given printed material that contains some funny animals and things that they interact
with at home, such as pets to recognize the availability of information in a print media. After
getting the interests in the print media, they are also given printed alphabets to understand there
is a relationship between the images and the alphabets. The second stage will involve the

children's interaction with nonenvironmental print such as lists and books. The children acquire
book handling skills, which may include holding books right side up and vocabularies. The third
stage will involve a child differentiating between different objects, and they are able to make fun
within themselves on the print media. The fourth stage involves the recognition of alphabets by
the children through regular recitation of the alphabets. The children will be in a position to sing
songs that involves alphabets and the numbers more often. The last stage in the emergent reading
will involve the ability of a child to follow instructions. Children will be able to pronounce
different words and can be able to write simple items such as the apparent objects and the names.
As a teacher, I would ensure that I create a conducive environment for the children for
them to develop a positive attitude towards education. The class would involve items such as
charts that are clear when reading. I would ensure the printed materials are funny as to attract the
children to learn more about the content. The children also feel comfortable when working in
groups to promote group reading among the children. Ensuring that the children are busy reciting
the alphabets and phonological will help to improve the memory of children. The class
environment will also involve the recognition of images to promote cognitive development.
Why predictable books are the most appropriate in emergent reading
Children in emergent reading are at their initial stage of brain development. In most
cases, the children will have no information on education and the fun in learning. The most
relevant books to introduce children to education are predictable books. Predictable books are
books that are written in an easy way for guessing on what is to happen next through the use of
repeated words, phrases, or sentences throughout texts (Royce, 2014). Predictable books have
some advantages as methods of introducing children to the world of education. One of the main
reasons is the promotion of a positive attitude towards learning. Predictable books simplify

learning and make the environment as favorable and comfortable for the children to recite and
follow. Developing a positive attitude defines the success of a child's education journey.
Secondly, predictable books help in creating bonding between children and the teacher. As they
recite the repeated phrases and words, the children will always feel comfortable in the presence
of the books, and they will cherish the moments of reading loud with other children and hence
helps in creating bonding with between children. The reading will promote social skills in
children.
Predictable books promote pronunciation skills in children. As they recite the same
phrases every day, they are able to perfect their pronunciation skills. The children get a chance to
promote their communication skills. The children will get an opportunity of exploring various
