The Elgin Marbles are a collection of Greek Marble sculptures, architectural pieces,
inscriptions initially being part of the Parthenon temple in Athens. They total up to 92 mesotopes
and 115 panels of Frieze. The Britain Museum owns 15 mesotopes and 56 panels of the frieze of
the whole collection of the Marbles (Anderegg, 2004, Pg. 25). For almost 200 years, the location
of the Parthenon temples resulted in a controversy on whether the marbles should remain in Britain
or returned to their original home greek. Some people argue that the artifacts should remain in
Britain since they are safer there than in Athens. Also, people argue that the current greeks are not
the Ancient Greeks; therefore, they have no value of the marbles and that the marbles have become
part of the British heritage: However, there many reasons to why the marbles should go back to
Greece rather in Britain.
The main reason is that art was created by one of the finest artists in the world whose skills
were never seen again until the rise of Michelangelo in the Renaissance. The design of the fluted
columns of the scriptures is evident in the great building around the world. Therefore, Greece
needs to keep the marble as an ahistorical record for the greatest artist (Beresford, 2015, Pg.40).
