Mental Illness Research: The Case of Bipolar Disorder
Introduction
Mental health disorders have affected most people across the globe over the years.
Diverse populations have suffered various conditions which in the long run have changed
their social, health and economic dimensions. One of the most common situations which have
affected millions of people across the globe is bipolar disorder. This condition is a mental
health problem that influences the way people reason and interacts with the surrounding
communities. This condition affects the mood and the ability of a person to maintain a
constant posture as far as anger and happiness management are concerned (Anderson,
Haddad & Scott, 2012).
Traditionally, this condition has been considered as maniac depression. Sometimes, a
person affected with bipolar disorder exhibits extremes of either happiness or low moods. At
the time, one feels depressed; it is hard to maintain a positive posture and connections with
the underlying communities. Also, it is hard for a bipolar disorder patient to maintain a
positive relationship with the day to day activities. From another dimension, it is worth noting
that people suffering from bipolar disorders can exhibit extreme happiness. At this moment,
these people are outgoing and extremely social. This mood may change abruptly with specific
triggers. Doctors have devised different treatment plans which seek to assist the affected
populations in the management of the conditions. This project explains the development of
the disease, signs and symptoms and the preferred mode of treatment which doctors usually
use.
Etiology
When addressing the issue of causes of this condition, experts argue that there is no
defined factor. Numerous research projects have been provided over the past years aimed at

discovering the potential factors responsible for the occurrence of bipolar disorders. The two
significant factors which experts believe to be associated with the circumstances of bipolar
disorder are:

Genetics

Biological differences and traits of people
From a genetics dimension, people who exhibit bipolar disorders are associated with

first degree relatives with the same conditions. The studies which support the theory of
bipolar disorder being brought about by genetics claim that the situation can be transferred to
siblings. The people whose first-degree relatives have bipolar disorders stand at a high chance
of suffering from the condition (Craddock & Sklar, 2013). However, there are no defined
results of the specific genes responsible for transferring bipolar disorder from parents to
children.
From the context of biological traits, experts argue that specific changes in the brain
may be responsible for the occurrences of the condition. For instance, issues such as brain
chemical imbalances have been associated with the occurrence of conditions such as mood
disorders. Hence, mood disorders are highly related to bipolar conditions. Therefore, experts
have concluded that neurotransmitter imbalances are responsible for the occurrences of
bipolar disorders.
The second biological condition which is responsible for the occur...
