Policing

The term policing refers to the approach that is used by law enforcement to fight crime in
the community. Ideally, the police department applies some strategies to maintain law and order
in the community. The idea of policing involves delivering services to the society as well as
working together with the community members to eliminate the criminal activities that the
community is facing. An effective policing involves collaboration of the police officers with the
community leaders, social workers, business owners, religious leaders, political leaders, schools,
and other laws critical stakeholders to improve the quality of life and eliminating disorderly
behaviors in the community. It is important for police officers to blend predictive policing and
community policing to prevent crime in the community. Weisburd, Telep, Hinkle, & Eck (2010)
argue that policing should not be based on the reactive approach; rather, the police officers need
to employ proactive measures. Before the introduction of policing, the community members
largely involved in maintaining their own security. The individual community members were
largely involved in ensuring that they live in the crime-free neighborhood. Policing can be
traced back to the early 19th century. Those who worked as the justices and constables of the
peace were not paid and did so at their will. The sheriffs were full time employed, and they were
in charge of law enforcement activities in their neighborhood. Since the 1980s, policing has
gradually undergone changes that move towards promoting strengthening cooperation with the
community and integrating technology in crime prevention. With the recent changes in the
social pattern, policing strategy needs to complement new and modern social patter.
