This short discussion forum includes a quick survey that will identify broadly what leadership style you lean towards. Knowing your leadership style is an important aspect of administrative and supervisory roles. However, equally important is understanding that, while we may have a preferred leadership style, we should be open and willing to use leadership styles that are most appropriate to the context. Effective leaders value consistency, but they will also value flexibility.
The survey we will use is based on Kurt Lewin’s development of three categories of leadership, all of which are still greatly referred to today. For a brief overview of Lewin’s three categories of leadership follow this link on “leadership types”. To help you gain awareness of which of the categories you are most aligned with, please take the following online quiz. Because this is a very generalized survey, you should also refer to the readings in The Community Tool Box to identify some of the subtle traits and behaviors of leadership. For example, if the results of the quiz identify you as leaning towards a more authoritarian style of leadership, by relying on the The Community Toolbox readings you may identify traits from other similar styles that help you narrow down where you fall on this spectrum.
After completing the quiz and comparing with other content from this week’s readings (or other research you may have conducted), in your initial post, include your results and discuss the following:
- What is your preferred or dominant “leadership style”?
- What is your least preferred “leadership style”?
- Thinking about your preferred/dominant “leadership style”, compare this to the individual factors found in your preferred quadrant of the CVF. Based on your preferred leadership style and preferred CVF quadrant discuss:
- What skills you currently have that will help you successfully navigate a leadership role in administrative practice?
- What skills you need to further develop to help you be more successful in navigating a leadership role?
