Healthcare is one of the most critical requirements in society since every other activity
that happens within a nation or the globe as a whole always depend on the health status of the
citizens. As a result, every country always seeks to improve healthcare provision and the entire
health sector to keep as many people as possible healthy. One of the most critical measures that
the United States government has ever made in line with these objectives is implementing the
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as the Affordable Care Act
(ACA), while some Americans have also nicknamed it the Obamacare. The enactment of this
Act has brought significant changes in the health sector of the United States despite attracting a
fair share of criticisms. One specific change that has been realized includes the process of
admissions through to discharge and post-discharge care (Carrasquillo, & Mueller, 2018). This
paper, therefore, discusses the components of the ACA, the changes it has brought regarding a
typical hospitalization, and how this process differs with previous ones that were practiced
before the implementation of the Act.
Hospitalization
Hospitalization refers to the situation when the patient has to spend at least one night at a
hospital because the conditions they suffer are too severe to allow them back home and,
therefore, need 24-hour or longer nursing care. This period also always involves taking a test and
further medication practices in an attempt to restore the normal functioning of the body.
However, the reasons for admissions usually vary and may range from positive to negative. For
instance, a person might be hospitalized for delivery of a baby, severe illness, elective surgery, or
for emergency treatment at the emergency department. Of all these reasons, emergency
