Description

THE CIRCLE ---- DAVE EGGERS

This Essay asks people to read this book because the requirements of this Essay are written around the entire book.

Essay Topic:

Over the course of the novel, protagonist Mae Holland transforms from a young idealist into a pawn for The Circle. The transformation is a gradual one, but one that is absolute. While working for the Circle, Mae experiences continuous brainwashing and coaching from her superiors, and she also faces great pressure from outsiders who are watching her every move after she goes "transparent". Mae feels a conflict between who she is inside versus who she presents herself to the world as. By the end of the novel, thought, Mae succumbs to the pressure, and, for all intents and purposes, becomes a tool of The Circle.

Who is most responsible for Mae's transformation? Is is the Circlers like Bailey, Stenton, Dan, Denise and Josiah, with their coercive practices? Or is it the outsiders behind screens who constantly watch, validate, and influence Mae's actions? Or do you feel the greatest responsibility belongs tot Mae herself?

Main Task: Make an argument for who you believe is most responsible for Mae's transformation, and as you back it with textual support, think about the significance of the transformation. You should support your position with quotes from The Circle and quotes from one or more of the nonfiction/secondary readings.

Who is most responsible for the change in Mae, and what might Eggers have been trying to say through the transformation? Why do you believe he ended the book the way he did, and what might his message be for those of us who read and watch Mae's transformation?

RUNNING HEAD: THE CIRCLE
Mae’s transformation could be blamed on the inventors of the circle’s way of operating at
first since it insists on using technology to make a transparent and more accountable society and
government. In so doing the transparency is achieved but the brainwashing that comes with it is
devastating. Mae a young lady who lands a job in the Circle falls victim to the company’s
process. After being caught in a mistake, Mae’s punishment involved being publicly shamed in
the eyes of the company. She was then asked to be the transparent face of the company of which
she agreed and this is where she sold out her private life.
Some people deep in the Circle’s cultish ways were also responsible for Mae’s change.
For instance; Eamon Bailey has a strong belief in people having full access to every bit of
information about everything. Because of this, he persuades Mae to go transparent after being
caught kayaking at night and Mae is convinced to do so. He teaches other employees the
injustice of Mae’s illegal kayaking. “I said that secrets are lies" Mae asserted, "When something
is kept a secret, two things happen. One is that it makes crimes possible. We behave worse when
we're not accountable. That goes without saying and second, secrets inspire speculation. When
we don’t know what’s being hidden, we guess, we make up answers” (Eggers, 2013).
Additionally, Dan, a Circle's employee, and Mae's boss influences Mae to have an online social
life due to his belief in the Circle's social environment.
Despite the company’s hand in Mae’s downfall, she is partly to blame for it. Although
she had been warned earlier by the likes of her secret lover “Kalden” of the dangers of giving up
her private life, Mae did not heed. She was so excited about the rush of being famous to the
outside world that she neglected the safety of living a private life. She allowed cameras
broadcasting a live feed of every aspect of her life to the entire outside world.

Another factor that contributed to Mae’s behavioral change was her greed for fame.
When she first got the job at the Circle with the help of her college friend Annie, Mae viewed it
as an opportunity of a lifetime. In the be...
