Homeland Security: Border Patrol
Introduction
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of the US administration is generally
charged with ensuring the security and safety of the lots of Americans residing within the
borders. It is arguably the most extensive and one of the most central departments of the
administration. A core part of their mandate has been to safeguard against the entry of illegal
migrants into the US. This has been done through departments such as the US Immigration and
Citizenship Services division, the US Customs and Immigration Enforcement, and US Border
and Customs Protection, (Frazier, Nakanishi, & Lorimer, 2009). The US government has been
unwavering in its support for border patrol agencies as a manifestation of how pertinent this
aspect of national security is to the wellbeing of the US society. A border agent is sworn to
protect the US from illegal entries and, while at it, is strongly governed by immigration and
other national security laws.
Thesis
The Homeland security border patrol has the responsibility of averting unlawful entry
into the US. They are charged with the duty to enforce state and immigration laws, including
apprehending aliens and smugglers who may be disposed to force their way into the country
using proscribed means.
Purpose
This paper aims to research and assess the formal role that the border patrol plays in
homeland security within the US border, which is an ever-dynamic landscape, its
responsibilities, challenges, and how to improve it and enhance border security going forward.

stated earlier, the U.S. CBP 2018 division is part of the entities that constitute the Homeland
Security Department. Their core mandate is to secure the US borders at the ports of entry. The
Border patrol Agency was formally launched on 24th May 1924 vide Congressional legislation
aimed at curbing an upsurge in incidents of illegal migration (Rosenblum, Bjelopera, &
Finklea, 2013).
While the initial mission of the Agency was to repulse illegal entries into the US by
immigrants, the events surrounding the terrorist attack of 9/11 altered the functioning of the
Border Patrol. The overall mission might still be to detect and avoid illegal entries, but the
focus has also shifted towards the detection and deterrence of possible terrorist activities (Bach,
2005). The Agency is solely responsible for manning thousands of miles of the borderline along
the Mexican and Canadian boundaries with the US as well as coastal waters around Florida
and the Island of Puerto Rico. Their line of work is quite demanding as they work all year
round (Bach, 2005).
Daily, their role is to line watch. This activity entails the apprehension, discovery, and
deterrence of smugglers of foreigners, undocumented aliens and terrorists at or adjacent to the
terrestrial border by upholding surveillance. They can do this from construing and following
physical evidence, tracks, and other marks, using leads, retorting to automated sensor television
systems, aircraft sightings, and a concealed location (U.S. CBP, 2018).
The unique, rigorous, and vigorous nature of their work requires a Border Patrol to be
