Germany developed a highly ambitious scheme to raise the number of renewable energy
sources to facilitate the transition to a greener industrial paradigm. This policy, known as
Energiewende implied insightful structural revolutions in the entire energy system. Individuals,
farmers, as well as industries, faced very high electricity costs while energy-intensive industries
were exempted, bringing a disparity that attracted criticism. This project encompasses dismantling
the nuclear power plant, leading to increased use of natural gas or coal. This paper presents the
historical development of the project, showing that the energy strategy goes beyond the
environmental and moral concerns.
Some doubts arise on the effectiveness of this strategy in the achievement of the high
electricity rates from renewable bases and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, while
eradicating nuclear energy use. Energy transition (Energiewende) has incentives, investments, and
legislations that increase renewable sources share in the generation of electricity and combating
climate change. Its design entails transformations and costs requiring the constant engagement of
social and economic sectors. Though the government architects the transformation, the operational
process includes city councils, individuals and other entrepreneurs.
