1. The S2861 Mental Health Education Bill of New Jersey
On 8th September 2019, Phil Murphy, Governor New Jersey signed into law a new
regulation requiring all public schools in the state to add mental health instruction in their
kindergarten to grade 12 health curriculums
The S2861 bill is aimed at enhancing the student comprehension, views and mental
health-related for promoting of the general well-being.
2. Intended implications
improve the wellness of its children mentally
Through teaching them about mental health, they will be comfortable to reach out for
support and counseling
They will get to know the challenges associated with mental health and the awareness.
3. Unintended implications
The law does not intend for mental health to be taught only on those children who
seemingly have mental health issues.
The law is not made to promote mental health profiling but to bring to attention the
importance of mental health.
4. Who Influenced the Creation of the Mental Health Bill?
The legislation to include mental health education in New Jersey public schools was
initiated by Senator Kristin Corrado’s.
His decision to come up with the bill was influenced by the many cases of suicide
witnessed for students who were depressed and did not know how to deal with it and
chose to take away their lives.
