Abstract
As students graduate from university, they are faced with burdensome loan payments
which slow the progress of achieving life goals. However, there are viable alternatives to debt
within one’s personal control when paying for college that can and ought to supersede the
expensive loan options. It is imperative to resolve this problem to lift the heavy weight of debt
off the masses of graduates.

The Graduate Grinch
Every year, as college seniors graduate, they are faced with an overwhelmingly huge
problem – student debt. This liability has become one of the fastest growing debts in the
American economy and is taking over the financial future of recent graduate's lives.
“Student loans have seen almost 157 percent in cumulative growth over the last 11 years... All
told, there’s a whopping $1.5 trillion in student loans out there...” (Griffin, 2018, para. 3). With
this massive accumulation of student debt, repayment makes life more difficult for graduates,

forcing them to delay buying houses, starting families, and even getting married. This crisis is
very costly, so something must be done. The problem can be solved by discovering a college that
is financially prudent for the student and reducing the debt load through scholarships.
To start, finding a university that will fit into the student’s budget is the impetus to
success. Since this strategy minimizes the chance of an imprudent loan, the possibility of regret

in the future for the student is diminished. This includes options from choosing a more affordable
degree to simply going to a local school. “Before you take the plunge, you should always
compare the total cost of earning your desired degree among at least two or three schools”
(Johnson, 2017, para. 37). Selecting the right school, not only for the student’s desired degree but

also with the pocketbook in mind, is extremely important. For instance, attending public
university will decrease the debt load when compared to private college where there tend to be
more costs. Learning at an in-state university is also a good idea when keeping prices low, as
going to an out-of-state tends to be more expensive because of higher tuition rates. Making this
simple change in the process of choosing a college will reduce the main amount of debt that must
be repaid.

Furthermore, student debt is largely reduced when scholarships are utilized. There is a

significant pressure afterwards. “Because scholarships are free money, however, students can
focus on their careers instead of worrying about how they will repay loans” (Mahuron, 2018,

qualifying. Saving students from worry, scholarships produce opportunities to avoid the heavy
weight of debt following graduation. Therefore, graduates will be able to invest their extra
money into purchasing a home or saving for retirement. Basically, graduates will get to move
forward with life instead of having the past hanging around and haunting them.
Thus, these two solutions are available to solve the pressing problem of student debt,

I Introduction:
* Identify the problem that must be solved.
The communication between gun owners and non gun owners on gun laws.
*Cite a “direct quote” (APA) that proves the problem is real:
Americans who own guns largely disagree with non-owners on gun policy, but some proposals have
support from both groups. (Parker, et al. 2017)
*Propose two (2) viable Solutions:
The first solution is that gun owners and non gun owners need proper education on gun safety.
The second solution is to have more extensive back ground checks and longer waiting periods
when purchasing a gun.
II Body Point:
*Discuss one logical solution.
One logical solution is that we educate childern at a younger age to know the right and wrong
uses for guns.
*Provide a positive quote (APA) to support the solution.
Majority of American parents – including half of non-gun owners – say they have talked with
their children about gun safety. (Parker, et al. 2017)
*Analyze using the Ashford PIE Method.
Expanding gun rights that allow teachers and scholl officials to carry guns.
According to a poll done in 2017 66% of gun owners would want guns allowed to
be carried at school. While only 35% of non gun owners agreed.
There needs to be a complete explantion from both parties why guns shoud or
should not be carried by school officals.
III Body Point:
*Discuss a second logical solution.
The right to feel protectected. Owning a gun gives the feeling of safety.
*Provide a positive quote (APA) to support the solution.
Protection tops the list of reasons for owning a gun. (Parker, et al. 2017)
*Analyze using the Ashford PIE Method.
Owning a firearm gives a sense of safety.
Two thirds of gun owners say protection is a major reason they own a gun (Parker, et al. 2017)
The reasoning behind gun owning is to feel safe. It is sad that we now live in a world where you
have to own a gun to feel safe. The public should work on what are the causes of needing a
firearm to feel safe.
IV Conclusion:
* Call to Action
The fact that only 21% of gun owners and 12 % of non gun owners have ever contacted a public
official to express their feelings on gun control.
* Tell the audience what to do next.
If the public is ever going to come to an agreement about gun polices every voice should be
heard weather you are a gun owner or non gun owner.
* For Example: Phone Call, Email, Letter, Petition, Advertisement, etc.…
Please reach out to a public official by phone, email or mail. This will help everyones voice be
heard on gun control.
