Summary of the Article
According to the article on “Violence against nurses working in US emergency
departments” by Gacki-Smith, Juarez, Boyett, Homeyer, Robinson, & MacLean, (2010),
workplace violence involving nurses has been prevalent especially within the emergency
department. Gacki-Smith et al. (2010) conducted the study aiming to find out the perceptions and
experiences of emergency department nurses in terms of violence from visitors and patients in
the Emergency Department of US healthcare facilities. The authors decided to write the article
after realizing that the emergency department is among the most vulnerable areas within a
healthcare facility where the level of violence is high. However, there is scarce data regarding
violence in emergency departments due to the unavailability of a standardized measurement and
mechanism for reporting such cases when they take place in a healthcare facility. When the study
was being conducted, the participants were Registered Nurses who belong to the Emergency
Nurses Association. These nurses were required to fill a questionnaire regarding a 69-item
survey.
After the study was carried out, it was found that about 25% of the respondents had faced
physical violence within the emergency department for over 20 times within the past three years
