Ethics assignment The assignment: Using 250-350 words explain your philosophy (your beliefs) about when it is acceptable and when it is NOT acceptable to cheat. Do not go to Google for this assignment. I want your personal beliefs. In class we discussed company social responsibility as a continuum – a continuum, in this case, means is a range from really bad companies to really good companies. Really bad companies are Obstructionist, those who do the least they can do are Defensive. Those who do good things but are not great are considered Accommodative. Those who are truly great and do what they can to make the world a better place are considered Proactive. As it is for companies it is true for human ethics. I defined ethics in class as “Doing the right thing when nobody is watching.” It is easy to do the right thing when Grandma is close by. I do not think the student who sent pics of the test would have done this if Grandma was next to her. Ethics is doing the right thing when you have nobody telling you to do it. Cheating is OK Cheating is Cheating is Cheating is most of the time acceptable sometimes OK never ok rarely I am not happy with the cheating incident in this class. I have discussed it with colleagues and my department chair. We considered many options to deal with it. The final decision is to reduce the midterm grade by 5 marks. You can earn back those 5 marks by completing this assignment successfully. Looking for ways to reach 250 words? Consider answering these questions: • Why cheating is OK in some situations but not in others? • Tell a story of a time in your life when you had to decide whether or not it was a good idea to cheat. • In your life experience when did you think, “It's OK to cheat.” When did you think, “This is wrong to cheat.” • How does cheating help/hurt your future career goals? To be clear, you do not have to answer all of the questions above. The questions above are simply suggestions in case you have trouble making it to 250 words. I work hard to prevent cheating on the midterm and final. If you are looking for more to write about you can give me advice on how to prevent this type of cheating in the future.
