MI 220 Contextual Interview Contextual Interview: Instructions The goal of this assignment is to practice conducting a contextual interview to collect data about how people use a technology. This data then can be used in the future to developed a richer understanding of technology use and to generate ideas and designs for new or improved technologies. The emphasis here is on the data collection: you want to produce a rich and detailed set of notes, sketches, and photos that can help you in the future. Remember, right now, you are just collecting data that will help us do the design later. Research Goal: You want to help design or improve a technology that enables multiple students to work together on writing a document for a group project. In Class, you and your partner came up with a detailed plan for a set of interviews. In this assignment, you will execute that plan. 1. As a pair, you must conduct exactly two contextual interviews with two different participants. 2. Each person must serve as the Interviewer for one of the interviews, and as the Note Taker for the other interview. The Interviewer should do all of the talking; the note take should not say anything after the warm-up introductions. 3. The interviewer must not know the participant before the interview. That is, you must interview a stranger. (It is OK if the note taker knows the participant, as they won’t really be talking during the interview.) (Suggestion: Each person should find one of their friends or colleagues to be interviewed. You will interview your partner’s friend, and your partner will interview your friend.) 4. Each interview should be approximately 45-60 minutes. Don’t keep a participant longer than 60 minutes. 5. Both interviewer and note taker should take notes. Though normally the note taker’s notes will be more detailed. It is OK if you don’t capture everything, especially for the interviewer. 6. About ½ your time should be spent understanding how the participant works with documents alone, and about ½ should be spent understanding group work. 7. You must turn in a digital copy of all of your notes, along with a cover sheet describing your interview. It is OK (and even encouraged) to take hand-written notes; simply use your phone or a camera to take a photo of each page of the notes. 8. You are encouraged but not required to provide an incentive to your participants as a “thank-you” for participating in the study. Even something small, like $5 or a gift card to Sparty’s, is sufficient. 9. You must follow ethical guidelines. This means that participants should provide informed consent to the interview. They have the right to refuse to answer any question, and they also have the right to stop the interview at any time. 10. Both students in the pair will receive the same grade.
