Abstract
The emergence of violent street gangs in the US dates back to the early part of the 19th century.
Challenges in finding work and a decent place to live among immigrants created a conducive
environment for the emergence of street gangs. Some of the most notorious street gangs include
the MS-13, the 18th Street gang, and the Mexican Mafia, which engage in criminal activities
such as drug trafficking, robbery, auto-theft, and even murders. Over the years, the number of
street gangs has been on the decline due to the efforts of law enforcement agencies to curb
domestic crime. Nowadays, most street gangs operate at the local level to avoid raising suspicion
of law enforcement agencies. The introduction of community policing has enhanced the
collaboration of law enforcement officers with members of the public in the quest to apprehend
criminals. The enactment of laws that permit the arrest, prosecution, and deportation of convicted
criminals has also led to the decline of street gangs in the US.
